Don't just Survive, but Thrive during the Holidays

The holidays are upon us and that can mean many things for different people. There is so much on the to-do list to get done, events to attend, presents to buy and wrap, and yet work life goes on, especially if you work at a place that has end of year deadlines to accomplish. Read on to learn some tips on how to not just survive the holidays, but thrive and enjoy this special time of year.

1. Exercise!

Of course, we all know how important exercise is. It becomes even more crucial this time of year as the holiday foods are richer, we spend more time indoors enjoying company, and the weather gets colder. Stick to an exercise routine that works for you. The release of endorphins can also help boost your mood when it gets dark so early.

2. Be okay with saying no.

There are so many activities, events, and parties this time of year to attend and host that it can be overwhelming, hard to fit it all in, and have time for yourself at the end of day. Pick and choose a couple of them that you are really looking forward to and be okay with saying no to those that aren't high priority. Your body and mind will thank you later.

3. Set a budget, and shop online.

Plan a budget that you know is realistic to stick to when shopping for presents. This will help decrease the stress associated with spending money when you know each purchase was planned for. Once that is set, shop online! Skip driving around from store to store (and possibly in the snow), finding a parking spot, and getting all the way into the store to find out they don't have what you are looking for. Shopping online saves a lot of time and makes it easy to find the best prices. Many online retailers also offer free gift wrapping with purchases.

4. Get some sleep.

Sleep is essential to functioning like a normal human being during the day. Lack of sleep affects our focus, reaction time, performance, and productivity. We all know what it feels like to not get enough sleep on a day we have a lot to do. Some quick tips to get high quality sleep include staying away from screens, such as your phone, at least one hour before bedtime, avoiding alcohol three hours before bedtime, and keeping your bedroom in the low 60s at night to help your body decrease your core temperature during deep sleep.

5. Use your insurance plan.

As we near the end of year, many people have met their deductibles for the year and can really maximize their insurance benefits. If something is bothering you, whether its that lingering cough or back pain, see the appropriate specialist now while the cost is cheaper for you. Getting a problem looked at and treated sooner will also avoid bigger costs down the road. The longer you have a problem, the more expensive it is to treat and the more time it takes to get cleared up.
