The Top Myths about Physical Therapy

At Geromove, we get a lot of questions about what we do as Physical Therapists, and how we help relieve pain, restore function, and get our clients and patients back to doing the things they love. There are a lot of correct assumptions out there about what Physical Therapists do, and there are some not-so-correct assumptions. Below, we will bust some myths about of physical therapy.

Myth #1: I need a doctor's referral to see a Physical Therapist.

This myth was true years ago but is no longer the case. In Wisconsin, you can see a Physical Therapist right away without wasting time to visit your doctor first to get a referral. This saves time, money, and will get you feeling better a lot quicker. If there is something we detect that warrants a visit to your primary care doctor or a specialist, we will let you know within the first visit.

Myth #2: Physical Therapy is for old people.

This couldn't be further from the truth! Physical Therapy is for people of all ages and at Geromove PT, we treat kids all the way to older adults. There are physical therapists who also treat babies born early in the NICU, as well as physical therapists who treat patients in hospice care.

Myth #3: Physical Therapy hurts!

The goal of Physical Therapy is to minimize your pain, not make it worse! Your Physical Therapist will work with you to gradually re-introduce activities and movement within comfort to get you back to feeling your best.

Physical therapy is also used as a better and safer alternative with less side effects when compared to other pain-relieving treatment such as pain medication, injections, and even surgery. If you have pain that is limiting you from living your life to the fullest, then you are a great candidate for physical therapy.

Myth #4: Physical Therapy is just for broken bones, injuries, people who have had surgery, etc.

Physical Therapists treat these things, and a whole lot more! We help those who have a broken bone, an injury, or have had surgery, but we also provide preventative treatment, treat dizziness and balance problems, and work on fall prevention.

There are many specializations as well including pelvic floor treatment and women's health, men's health, treatment for jaw pain and dysfunction, and vestibular treatment. If you are not sure if Physical Therapy would be helpful for your condition, call us to speak directly with a Doctor of Physical Therapy before you even make an appointment.

We hope that helped to bust some myths about physical therapy and teach you something you didn't know.
